Asymmetric Monstrosity

I find thinking about, and playing with, projections to be a lot of fun. And one day some years ago, I started making up a series of what I called “Useless Projections.” This is the most ambitious of them, the asymmetric monstrosity.

It’s an equal-area projection, and while it may look odd, it’s just as valid as any other, I think. It reminds us of the fact that we accept (and consider “natural”) certain kinds of distortions on maps, yet reject others.
