Bird Migrations
June 2024High Country News asked me to produce this piece, intended to illustrate a couple of stories on the migrations of two bird species: Wilson's Phalarope and Long-billed Curlew. I've worked with bird migration data a few other times in the past, most notably on the Ecological Atlas of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas, so I was able to pull out some of my existing strategies and data familiarity to make this come together.
The Wilson's Phalarope makes a very long migration, and it was important to the project to show the whole range that it covered. This led to some challenges in fitting both species into tight spaces. Since this is more of an illustration than a science visualization, I got away with smoothing things out a bit to help reduce the visual chaos.
The color palette was meant to rhyme with some of the photos that accompany the articles.
