This map was made to accompany an article appearing in Kansas History. It may appear simple, but neary all monochrome work presents challenges. A lot of the effort goes toward making sure each level of information remains legible and distinct from the others.

As the piece was being finalized, I asked the client if we could also add in the Native American nations present in the area in the 1850s. It would be an easy enough thing to leave off, but silences on our maps perpetuate the notion that this country was a blank slate.
