I produce a lot of small monochrome maps for books, and this set, for a forthcoming book by Zhenzhen Lu, is fairly typical of that sort of work. It’s a (usually fun) challenge to try and fit all the information in a very small space, while also keeping everything high-contrast, to ensure that it prints successfully. I almost never get to see a printed proof of these maps, so they have to be right the first time, with no chance to make adjustments later on.
