Utopia

2008–2009
Early on in my explorations of Adobe Illustrator, I created a couple of maps which were inspired by the Voynich Manuscript and the Codex Seraphinianus. They are deliberately obfuscatory — if I thought there was an obvious interpretation of some of the map symbols, I tried to build something in to confound it.

The script is my own devising, and it’s not encoding anything particular — just a random arrangement of graphemes. For the second map, I expanded the typeface to include serif and sans variants, multiple weights, and an oblique. The aesthetic of Utopia 2 comes from a youth spent around 1980s green-on-black computer monitors.
